About ASF Translation Awards
The American-Scandinavian Foundation presents three translation awards each year for exceptional translations of works of poetry, fiction, theatre, or literary prose by Nordic authors from the 20th or 21st century:
1. The Nadia Christensen Prize comes with three components: a $2,500 cash prize, the publication of an excerpt in the Scandinavian Review, and a bronze medallion in honor.
2. The Leif and Inger Sjöberg Prize comes with a $2,000 grant, publication of an excerpt in Scandinavian Review, and a commemorative bronze medallion. It is offered to a person whose literary translations from a Nordic language have not yet been published.
3. The Wigeland Prize offers a $2,000 cash prize, publication of an excerpt in the Scandinavian Review, and a bronze medallion in recognition of the best translation from Norwegian by a Norwegian citizen.

Application Guidelines
Before applying for the ASF Translation Awards you must follow the following guidelines-
- The prizes are for outstanding English translations of poetry, fiction, drama, or literary prose originally written in a Nordic language.
- Although they may not be from a single work, translations must be from the writing of a single author.
Online Application Requirements
- Your CV
- A succinct biography of the writer whose work you are translating;
- One copy of the translation, with the proposed book’s title page and table of contents, from which the submitted work is a chapter. Manuscripts for prose must be 25–50 double-spaced pages; those for poetry must be 15–25 pages. * The name of the translator shall not appear on any page of the translation document, and manuscripts must have numbered pages. Submissions with the translator’s name on them will be rejected;
- only the relevant pages of one copy of the work(s) in the original language; and
- a letter or other document authorizing the translation to be entered in this competition and published in Scandinavian Review, signed by the author, the author’s agent, or the author’s estate.
To be Noted!
- It’s possible that the translation entered into the competition had not yet been published in English as of the submission deadline. (If the publisher is also considering the supplied translation, please let us know when they anticipate publishing it.)
- The same entry cannot be submitted by a translator to more than two competitions at a time.
- A translator may only receive the Translation Prize three times in their career.
