The scholarship is available to full-time students in North American institutions with ABFSE accreditation studying mortuary science who are not related to the proprietors of any active funeral homes.
The availability of scholarships determines their size (both number and amount). Two scholarships for the spring cycle are typically given out in late June, and two for the fall cycle are typically given out in late December or early January. Each scholarship is worth $1,500. Application submission is only possible online. All applications must be thoroughly filled out, and all necessary forms must be filled out and validated in the ways that are specified.
The Selected Educational Trust Board of Trustees evaluates each completed and qualified application, and on the basis of the materials presented, selects the award recipients.
The recipient’s academic institution will receive a direct payment of the entire scholarship award amount, which must be utilized only for the recipient’s tuition and related costs. To be considered eligible, the recipient must be enrolled in Mortuary Science School right now and must be taking classes during the time the award money will be used.

Second Career Scholarship Eligibility –
- At the time the grant is being used, you must be presently enrolled and taking classes in a mortuary science program that has earned accreditation from the ABFSE.
- Be unrelated to any proprietor of a funeral parlor that is currently in business in North America.
- Please provide documentation demonstrating your prior full- or part-time employment in at least one occupation other than the funeral industry.
- Give evidence that your new career will be in the Funeral Service.
- Show proof of the tuition, fees, and financial aid you are currently receiving.
- Give documentation of your enrollment in and completion of courses in mortuary science, together with the dates of those courses.
- Give documentation of your grades and GPA for all completed mortuary science courses.
- A completed online application must be verified.
- Provide documentation of all forms that must be completed as part of the online application.

Application Required for the Scholarship –
- A fully finished web application.
- A completed Mortuary Science Coursework and GPA Assessment Form that has been submitted online and has been validated by an authorized representative of the applicant’s academic institution.
- A Financial Needs Assessment Form that has been filled out, certified by a duly elected official of the applicant’s academic institution, and submitted online.
- A 1,500-word essay outlining the applicant’s need, prior or present job, professional experiences, goals, and desire to work in the funeral industry. You must upload this essay as part of your online application.
- A recommendation letter from a professor.
- A recommendation letter from a current or former employer.
