About Calvin Smyre Endowed Scholarship

Calvin Smyre, a native of Columbus, Georgia, and a member of the Georgia House of Representatives who represents Columbus-Muscogee County is recognized by the Synovus Bank/Calvin Smyre Endowed Scholarship Fund. The Georgia General Assembly’s longest-serving member, Mr. Smyre was chosen in 1974. In 1976, as a management trainee, Mr. Smyre joined Synovus Bank. He served as executive vice president of corporate affairs until his retirement in 2014.

The Synovus Bank/Calvin Smyre Endowed Scholarship, created in collaboration with UNCF, will award need-based financial aid to service-oriented African American college sophomores majoring in any subject related to banking and finance. A student attending Fort Valley State University, where Mr. Smyre holds the position of Chair of the FVSU Foundation, will be the recipient of one prize each year.

Eligible Candidate: The scholarship is open to black students who are enrolled in schools or universities in the Synovus service areas of Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, and South Carolina. The applicant’s major or intended major must be in a field connected to banking or financial services.

Number of Awards: 6

Awarded Every Year: Yes

Award Amount: $4500

Majors: Business-related fields including accounting, banking, business, business administration, communications, computer science, economics, finance, information technology, marketing, and risk management.

Note: Freshmen in college now are not eligible for this award.

Scholarship’s Eligibility –

  1. The applicant must be Black or African American and a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the US.
  2. On a scale of 4.0, applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5.
  3. Reside in, or have a permanent address in, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, or Alabama.
  4. Candidates must have a major or be planning a major in a subject related to banking or finance.
  5. Candidates have submitted the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and, as determined by the applicant’s institution, have a documented unmet financial need.
  6. Be enrolled full-time as a sophomore in college for the 2022–2023 academic year at any accredited 4-year institution in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, or Tennessee; applicants from HBCUs will be given preference.

Application Requirements-

  • A current academic transcript, whether official or unauthorized.
  • Up to five instances of the applicant’s recent volunteer work or community service should be listed and described.
  • 2 assertions of 250 words each (see the application for prompts).
  • One letter of recommendation was submitted by a non-relative.

Instructions for a letter of recommendation –

To invite a reference to submit a recommendation, applicants must first enter into their UNCF student account, go to the Application Status page, and select Invite Reference. To find out whether recommendations have been completed, applicants must visit the Application Status page. If the initial Reference is unavailable, applicants should invite a backup Reference.
