USRA Scholarship | Distinguished Undergraduate Awards

USRA Scholarships – As part of its Distinguished Undergraduate Award program, USRA offers up to four scholarships to undergraduate students each autumn. By the time they receive the award, applicants must have less than two(2) years left to complete a B.S. or B.A. in a science or engineering field, including life science and science education.

About the USRA Scholarship Award

Scholarship in Memory of Thomas R. McGetchin

This USRA scholarship is given in memory of Thomas R. McGetchin, a former director of the Lunar and Planetary Institute who made significant contributions to the field of igneous and volcanic processes. His work involved field, exploratory, and theoretical studies of volcanic activity on Earth, the Moon, and Mars. $5000 one-time reward.

Scholarship in Memory of John R. Sevier

Sevier worked for USRA for 22 years, holding the positions of Deputy Director of the Division of Space Life Sciences and Acting Director of the Lunar and Planetary Institute. He dedicated his life to education and the promotion of aeronautical technology, and this memorial scholarship commemorates that. $5000 one-time reward.

Scholarship in Education in Memory of James B. Willett

The late James B. Willett, a renowned astronomer who collaborated with USRA via the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA Headquarters, is honored with this grant. $5000 one-time reward.

Award for the Frederick A. Tarantino Memorial Scholarship

Frederick A. Tarantino, who served as President and CEO of USRA from 2006 to 2014, is honored with this scholarship in honor of his many achievements to USRA and his commitment to advancing the education of young scientists and engineers in subjects linked to space science. $5000 one-time reward.

Award for the Judith L. Pipher Memorial Scholarship

This USRA scholarship honors the late Judy Pipher for her work in infrared astronomy, her mentoring of young scientists and engineers, and her numerous contributions to USRA as a member of the Board of Trustees, the University of Rochester’s representative, and the chair of the USRA SOFIA Science Council. $5000 one-time reward.
